Punta Mosquito — The 2026 Guide
By Mr. Playas · Updated March 2026
Punta Mosquito is the long sandbar at the east end of Holbox where the Yum Balam lagoon empties into the Caribbean. At low tide a finger of dry sand extends nearly a kilometer offshore through bath-warm, ankle-deep water. It's the most photographed spot on the island and, in flamingo season, one of the few places in Mexico where you can see them feeding from a public beach.
Best time to walk to Punta Mosquito?
Two hours before or after low tide — check the daily tide chart at any rental shop or in the Windy app. At high tide the channel between town and the point is chest-deep and dangerous to cross. Leave town by 7:30 AM for sunrise flamingos in winter.
How to Get There
- On foot — 4 km east along the beach (45–60 min). Best option.
- Golf cart — sand road runs parallel to the beach. Park before the channel.
- Horseback — local operators run 2-hr beach tours that finish at the point.
What to Bring
Reef-safe sunscreen, water (no vendors past La Isla Bonita), zoom lens if you want flamingo shots, and water shoes — the sand has occasional shells. Pack out everything. The point sits inside the Yum Balam Biosphere Reserve and rangers patrol it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, but the water is shallow and the current can run strong at the channel mouth. The lagoon side is calmer than the Caribbean side.
No facilities at the point. La Isla Bonita beach club at km 2 has both. Pack out trash.
It shifts seasonally with storms and currents. Most of the year it's accessible; after a major storm it can take weeks to reform.
