Puerto Vallarta: Your Mr. Playas Guide
Mexico's Pacific coast with a personality of its own. Humpback whales from December to March, the best food scene on the coast, and beaches you can walk to from downtown. No hype — just what you need to know.
Puerto Vallarta is the most complete beach destination on Mexico's Pacific coast. Beaches in the city center, a restaurant scene that competes with any capital, real nightlife, culture, street art, and humpback whales in Bahía de Banderas between December and March. It is not an all-inclusive resort destination — although those exist. It works best when you explore it on foot.
Sayulita, San Pancho, and Punta de Mita are less than an hour away. Many travelers combine both destinations in the same trip. See the Nayarit guide.
Puerto Vallarta is the one Pacific destination I recommend to people who want both beach and city. Los Cabos is prettier from a drone. Sayulita is more bohemian. But PV has all of it in one place — a real downtown you can walk, restaurants that compete with Mexico City, humpback whales from your breakfast table in winter, and a malecón that is genuinely fun after dark. Stay in the Romantic Zone, eat outside the resort, and spend one morning on a whale watching boat. You will understand why people come back every year.
Choose Your Zone
5 neighborhoodsPuerto Vallarta is not one place. It is several destinations stitched together, each with its own personality, price range, and crowd. The most common mistake: people arrive without knowing what zone they booked.
First time in PV? Romantic Zone for local vibe, Hotel Zone for all-inclusive comfort. Read the full neighborhoods guide.

Low season (June–October) is a real value opportunity. Prices drop 30–40%, hotels negotiate, and the rain usually comes in short afternoon bursts — not all-day storms. Read the travel guide.
