Los Cabos — The Complete Guide
Beaches, Cabo San Lucas & More

Where the desert meets the sea. The Arch, humpback whales, world-class sport fishing, and the best Pacific sunsets in Mexico. Loud, expensive, and absolutely worth it if you know where to go. Mr. Playas has done the work.

    Why Los Cabos?

Los Cabos sits at the southern tip of Baja California Sur, where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific Ocean. The geography produces something unusual: the desert — real, dry, cactus-studded Sonoran desert — ends at dramatic cliffs and the water begins. The Arch of Cabo San Lucas, a natural rock formation at the very tip of the peninsula, is where most visitors go first and for good reason.

The region is split into two towns connected by a 20-mile Tourist Corridor lined with resorts and private beaches. Cabo San Lucas is the loud one: marina, nightlife, sport fishing fleets, beach clubs, the spring break energy. San José del Cabo is quieter, more colonial, with an art gallery district, a protected estuary full of birds, and restaurants that have earned national attention. Both are worth your time.

Mr. Playas' honest take: Los Cabos is expensive by Mexican standards and makes no apology for it. But there is a local Los Cabos that runs parallel to the resort circuit — the Mercado del Mar for fresh seafood, the taco stands downtown, the public beaches that don't charge $50 for a chair. This guide covers both worlds.

    Mr. Playas' Take

Los Cabos is two towns pretending to be one destination. Cabo San Lucas is the loud one — marina, clubs, spring break energy, sport fishing. San José del Cabo is the quiet one — art galleries, a protected estuary, restaurants that have earned national recognition. They are 30 minutes apart. Stay in one, day-trip the other. The Tourist Corridor between them has the best resorts and the worst accessibility to anything that is not your resort. If you want to eat well and actually see something: base in San José and taxi to Cabo for the nightlife.

Los Cabos is the priciest US-buyer market in Mexico — but also the most professionalized, with closing infrastructure that resembles a US transaction more than the rest of the country. Before signing anything, read Safe Harbor Mexico's walkthrough on buying property in Mexico as an American.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Q Cabo San Lucas or San José del Cabo?

Cabo San Lucas for nightlife, the marina, beach clubs, and maximum energy. San José del Cabo for quiet, art, better restaurants, and a more local atmosphere. They are 30 minutes apart. Mr. Playas recommends staying in one and day-tripping the other.

Q Can you swim at all Los Cabos beaches?

No. Many Pacific-facing beaches have dangerous currents. Playa El Medano in Cabo San Lucas is the safest and most popular. Playa Palmilla and Chileno Bay are also calm and swimmable. Always check flags.

Q What is the best time to visit Los Cabos?

October through May: ideal weather, 72–86°F. December through March: humpback whale season — spectacular. June through September: hotter with hurricane risk, but prices drop 30–40%.

    Q Is Los Cabos expensive?

Yes, it is one of the most expensive beach destinations in Mexico. Decent hotel: $150–300 USD/night. Dinner: $30–60 USD/person. But there are ways to save: local taco stands, public beaches, and Airbnbs in San José del Cabo.

Q How do I get to Los Cabos?

Fly into Los Cabos International Airport (SJD). Direct flights from 20+ US cities and Mexico City (2.5 hrs). From the airport to Cabo San Lucas: 45 min. Private transfer or rental car recommended.
