Los Cabos — The Complete Guide
Beaches, Cabo San Lucas & More
Where the desert meets the sea. The Arch, humpback whales, world-class sport fishing, and the best Pacific sunsets in Mexico. Loud, expensive, and absolutely worth it if you know where to go. Mr. Playas has done the work.
Why Los Cabos?
Los Cabos sits at the southern tip of Baja California Sur, where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific Ocean. The geography produces something unusual: the desert — real, dry, cactus-studded Sonoran desert — ends at dramatic cliffs and the water begins. The Arch of Cabo San Lucas, a natural rock formation at the very tip of the peninsula, is where most visitors go first and for good reason.
The region is split into two towns connected by a 20-mile Tourist Corridor lined with resorts and private beaches. Cabo San Lucas is the loud one: marina, nightlife, sport fishing fleets, beach clubs, the spring break energy. San José del Cabo is quieter, more colonial, with an art gallery district, a protected estuary full of birds, and restaurants that have earned national attention. Both are worth your time.
Mr. Playas' honest take: Los Cabos is expensive by Mexican standards and makes no apology for it. But there is a local Los Cabos that runs parallel to the resort circuit — the Mercado del Mar for fresh seafood, the taco stands downtown, the public beaches that don't charge $50 for a chair. This guide covers both worlds.
The Arch, the marina, the best beaches, and the nightlife — all in our complete Cabo San Lucas guide.
Los Cabos is two towns pretending to be one destination. Cabo San Lucas is the loud one — marina, clubs, spring break energy, sport fishing. San José del Cabo is the quiet one — art galleries, a protected estuary, restaurants that have earned national recognition. They are 30 minutes apart. Stay in one, day-trip the other. The Tourist Corridor between them has the best resorts and the worst accessibility to anything that is not your resort. If you want to eat well and actually see something: base in San José and taxi to Cabo for the nightlife.
