Things to Do in Puerto Escondido

By Mr. Playas · Updated 2026

    Laguna Manialtepec — Bioluminescence (Jun–Dec)

The most underrated experience near Puerto Escondido. The lagoon sits 14 km west of town. Night tours by kayak or small boat through mangrove channels where dinoflagellate bioluminescence produces visible blue-green light with any water movement. Comparable to Bacalar's bioluminescence at its best. Less famous. Less crowded. Tours: $30–50 USD per person, departing around 7:30 PM. Book through local operators — ask your accommodation.

    Laguna Chacahua National Park

Two hours west of Puerto Escondido. A coastal lagoon system with crocodiles, bird colonies, mangroves, and a beach village accessible only by boat. Full-day tours: $40–60 USD including the boat, guide, and lunch. One of the most genuinely remote natural experiences accessible from the coast.

    Surf Watching at Zicatela

For non-surfers: sitting at one of the Zicatela beach bars with a cold drink and watching the Pipeline break is genuinely compelling. During competition season (July–September), the crowd and commentary give it a sports event quality. Zero cost. Extremely recommended.

    Mezcal Tasting

Puerto Escondido is the southern access point for mezcal produced in the Oaxacan highlands — small-batch, artisan productions from villages 2 hours into the mountains. The better mezcal bars carry bottles you will not find in the US or Europe. A guided tasting covers the different maguey varieties, production methods, and village origins.

    Cooking Classes

Half-day classes teaching Oaxacan coastal cooking: mole negro technique, tlayuda preparation, fresh ceviche, and the use of local ingredients. A class that includes market shopping at Mercado Benito Juárez first is the better version.

    Huatulco Day Trip

45 minutes east by colectivo. A bay boat tour visiting La Entrega for snorkeling ($40–60 USD including equipment and lunch). The contrast between Puerto Escondido's independent traveler energy and Huatulco's more resort-oriented infrastructure is interesting. Worth one day.

    The Adoquín at Night

The pedestrian malecón comes fully alive at night — food carts, fresh juice stands, mezcal bars, live music. The smoked marlin tostada cart that operates from about 7 PM is the specific food recommendation. One of the better evenings in Puerto Escondido costs under $20 USD.

    Do the Manialtepec night tour

Every Puerto Escondido visitor who surfs spends their evenings talking about surf. The ones who do the Manialtepec night kayak tour spend their evenings talking about bioluminescence. Both are the right choice. The lagoon tour is available June through December for $30–50 USD. .
