The 6 Best Beaches
Reviewed by Mr. PlayasPlaya Los Algodones
Blvd. Beltrones Km 17–20
★★★★★The flagship beach of San Carlos. A long bay of golden sand with calm water and the sunsets that put San Carlos on National Geographic's list. Restaurants like Sunset Bar & Grill sit directly on the waterfront. The right beach for families, kayaking, paddleboarding, and doing nothing particularly productive.
Playa Piedras Pintas
Km 10, across from El Crestón
★★★★★The best shore-accessible snorkel spot in San Carlos. Rocky formations create natural pools where tropical fish, sea stars, urchins, and the occasional ray concentrate. Crystal-clear water October through May. Entry is free from the beach; gear rental available in town.
Bahía San Francisco
5 km from center, toward Nacapule Canyon
★★★★★A semicircular protected bay sheltered by mountains that creates some of the calmest and most turquoise water in San Carlos. Less known than Los Algodones — that is the point. Access via dirt road. Worth it.
Playa Blanca
Residential sector, San Carlos
★★★★☆Fine white sand in an upscale residential zone. The beachfront homes here are among the most sought-after vacation rentals in San Carlos. Calm water, family atmosphere, and public access — technically. More limited than the main beaches.
Playa El Crestón
Blvd. Beltrones Km 8–12
★★★★☆The most convenient beach from the San Carlos center — all services nearby: supermarkets, restaurants, pharmacies. Good as a base for exploring further beaches. Direct view of Cerro Tetakawi from the water.
La Manga
7 km south of San Carlos, dirt road
★★★★★A working fishing village with a rustic beach and the best seafood in San Carlos — Mariscos Doña Rosita. Pangas leave before dawn and return with what you eat at noon. The dirt road keeps the crowds away. That is the point.
Which beach should you choose?
For sunsets: Los Algodones, without question. The colors the sun paints over the bay are world-famous.
For snorkeling: Piedras Pintas. The rock formations create a natural aquarium accessible from shore.
For families with kids: Playa Blanca and El Crestón. Calm water and services nearby.
For fresh seafood: La Manga. A fishing village where the catch goes from the boat to your plate in hours.
To escape everything: Bahía San Francisco. Turquoise, calm, secret.
Every first-timer asks about Los Algodones. That is the right answer for a first visit. But the meal that stays with people longest is always at Doña Rosita in La Manga. Grilled octopus, pelicans overhead, the smell of the sea. Drive the 7 kilometers. The dirt road is ten minutes of your life. The meal is a permanent memory. .
