Palancar Reef — The 2026 Honest Guide
By Mr. Playas · Updated March 2026
Palancar is the dive site that put Cozumel on the world map. A 5-kilometer stretch of the Mesoamerican Reef on the island's southwest side, broken into four named sections — Gardens, Horseshoe, Caves, and Bricks — each with its own coral architecture, swim-throughs, and 30-meter walls dropping into the blue.
Is Palancar good for snorkelers?
Yes — Palancar Gardens has reef tops as shallow as 5 meters with excellent visibility. Snorkel tours from Cozumel run $50–70 USD and reach the same reef the divers use.
The Four Palancar Sites
- Palancar Gardens — shallowest section, snorkel-friendly, sea turtles common
- Palancar Horseshoe — semicircular formation, drift dive, 18–25 m
- Palancar Caves — swim-throughs and tunnels, intermediate divers
- Palancar Bricks — deeper wall, advanced divers, big pelagics

May through September has the calmest seas and best visibility (30+ meters). November through March can be choppy from north winds.
Open water is fine for Gardens and Horseshoe. Caves and Bricks are better suited to advanced divers comfortable with drift currents.
Most reputable operators include the $4 USD marine park fee. Confirm at booking — independent operators sometimes charge it separately.
