Holbox Whale Shark Season — The 2026 Guide

By Mr. Playas · Updated March 2026

Holbox sits next to one of the largest known whale shark aggregations on the planet. Between mid-May and mid-September, hundreds of whale sharks feed at a point called Afuera, about 10 km offshore. Swimming alongside a 25-foot animal that is wholly indifferent to your presence is the kind of experience that recalibrates everything.

    Quick answer

When should I book a Holbox whale shark tour?

Mid-July through August for the highest density and best weather. Season officially runs May 15 to September 15, but June can have rough seas and early May has lower numbers. Book 2–4 weeks ahead in peak month — operator slots are capped by CONANP.

What a Tour Day Looks Like

    • 6:30 AM — operator pickup at your Holbox hotel
    • 7:30 AM — boat departure from the main dock, 90-min ride to Afuera
    • 9:00–12:00 PM — multiple in-water encounters, two swimmers per shark
    • 12:30 PM — ceviche lunch and snorkel stop at Cabo Catoche reef
    • 3:00 PM — back at the Holbox dock

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Is it safe?

Yes — whale sharks are filter feeders, no teeth that can hurt you. The bigger risk is seasickness on the 90-min ride; take medication an hour before.

    Can kids do it?

Most operators require age 5+ and a confident swimmer. Pregnant women are not permitted by CONANP rules.

What if I don't see a whale shark?

In peak season (July–August) sightings are near-guaranteed. In May or September, some operators offer a partial refund or second-day attempt if no sharks appear.
