    Best Beaches in Puerto Escondido

    Playa Zicatela — Mexican Pipeline

3 km of dark volcanic sand facing the open Pacific. The most famous beach in Puerto Escondido and the most dangerous. The shore break here is powerful in all conditions, all year. Do not swim. Watch from the shore or from the palapa restaurants and bars set back from the waterline — this is genuinely spectacular viewing. At peak swell it is one of the most extraordinary natural spectacles in Mexico.

Playa Carrizalillo — Best for Swimming

The protected cove 10 minutes by taxi from the center. 167 steps descend to a small beach with turquoise water, gentle waves, and reef on both sides. This is the swimming beach in Puerto Escondido. The cove is small — 200 meters of sand — which means it fills on busy days, but it never approaches the volume of the main beaches. A small restaurant at the north end serves ceviche and drinks. The snorkeling on the reef edges is excellent. Come early.

    Playa La Punta

The southern end of Zicatela where the beach curves slightly and the wave loses some of its power. Swimmable in calm conditions (check with locals; varies day to day). The social hub of Puerto Escondido's beach scene — palapa bars, hammocks, surf school operations, and the best sunset viewing in town.

    Playa Bacocho

North of the center, a long open beach with a lagoon behind it. More powerful surf than Carrizalillo and variable conditions — some days swimmable, some days not. The area behind the beach has upscale hotels. Less crowded than the tourist beaches and requires a taxi to reach.

    Playa Puerto Angelito & Manzanillo

Two small coves accessible by water taxi from the main pier or by walking 15 minutes north of the Adoquín. Calmer than Zicatela, more local than Carrizalillo, with fishing pangas and snorkeling in the clear water between the coves. Not as photogenic as Carrizalillo but more authentic in character.

The steps at Carrizalillo going up

167 steps down to paradise is easy. 167 steps back up after 4 hours in the sun is a different matter. Bring water for the ascent. Go early in the morning when the steps are shaded. The steps are part of why Carrizalillo stays less crowded than it should be — most tourists do not make it. .
