Puerto Escondido — The Complete Guide
Surf, Beaches, Food & the Manialtepec Lagoon
Mexico's surf capital on the Pacific. Home of the Mexican Pipeline — one of the most powerful beach breaks in the world — and also Carrizalillo, where the water is turquoise and the steps are steep and the ceviche is cold.
Puerto Escondido is a Pacific port town that became internationally known for one thing — the Mexican Pipeline at Zicatela, a shore break so powerful and so photogenic that it draws professional surfers every July and August. But Puerto Escondido the destination is significantly more than that one wave.
The town has five distinct neighborhoods with five distinct characters. Zicatela is the surf district. La Punta is the hippie-relaxed transition zone. The Adoquín is the tourist malecón with the seafood restaurants. Rinconada is the residential area with the cliffs and Carrizalillo below. And the centro is the actual town where 30,000 Oaxacans live and eat and do not particularly care about your surf wax.
The food is the Oaxacan coast at its best. The Mercado Benito Juárez serves the full comida oaxaqueña for $4. Smoked marlin tostadas at the Adoquín ceviche stands. Mezcal from producers you will not find in any store in the United States. Tlayudas with fresh quesillo.
Most Puerto Escondido visitors stay in Zicatela because that's where the action is. They spend the week watching surf they cannot participate in and wishing the water was calmer. Carrizalillo is 10 minutes away by taxi. The water is turquoise and swimmable. Staying in Zicatela and day-tripping Carrizalillo is the optimal configuration. .

Frequently Asked Questions
The Mexican Pipeline at Zicatela beach — one of the world's most powerful beach breaks, hosting international surf competitions every July–August. Also: Playa Carrizalillo for swimming, Laguna Manialtepec for bioluminescence, and the Oaxacan food scene at the market.
Absolutely. Carrizalillo is excellent for swimming. La Punta has the best sunset bars. Manialtepec bioluminescent tours are extraordinary. The food alone justifies the trip. Non-surfers have plenty to do — the surf is just the most famous part.
November through April: dry season, clearest water, best conditions for Carrizalillo. July–August: biggest Zicatela surf and the professional competitions. June–December: bioluminescent lagoon season. September–October: turtle nesting peaks at nearby Mazunte.
Safe for tourists with normal precautions. The main danger is physical — the ocean. Zicatela kills people every year who underestimate it. Everything else is standard Mexican beach town safety: watch belongings, use taxis at night, use common sense.
