Surfing in Puerto Escondido: The Complete Guide

By Mr. Playas · Updated 2026

    Zicatela — The Mexican Pipeline

Zicatela is the reason Puerto Escondido is on the international surf map. The beach faces southwest into the open Pacific, collecting swell from thousands of miles of open ocean. The Pipeline is a hollow shore break that breaks in very shallow water over a sand bottom. Peak season: July through September. During this window the Pipeline can reach 20+ feet. The annual Puerto Escondido Cup runs in August or September. Who can surf Zicatela: experienced shortboarders who can read heavy, hollow shore break and handle wipeouts in shallow water. This is not an intermediate wave in any conditions.

La Punta — Beginners and Longboarders

The southern end of Zicatela, where the beach curves and the wave breaks more gently. Appropriate for beginners and longboarders who prefer a slower, more flowing wave. Surf schools operate here: Oasis Surf Academy and Central Surf are established operations with certified instructors. Lessons: $20–30 USD for 2 hours with board.

    Playa Bacocho — Intermediates

North of the center, a longer open beach with more consistent intermediate-level surf. Less dramatic than Zicatela, more accessible than La Punta, and less crowded than both. Surf rentals available at the beach entrance.

    Other Nearby Breaks

The coast between Puerto Escondido and Huatulco has additional breaks: Chipehua, Barra de la Cruz (one of the best right-hand point breaks in southern Mexico), and several unnamed reef breaks. The region is significantly less charted than the Riviera Nayarit — which is part of its appeal.

    Board Rentals and Equipment

Surf shops on Zicatela and La Punta rent boards: $15–25 USD per day. Longboards and foam learner boards at La Punta shops. Wax, leashes, and rash guards available. Wetsuit not needed — water temperature stays above 77°F year-round.

    A note on self-assessment

Every surf spot on Earth has a version of this problem: people arrive and decide they are more experienced than they are. Zicatela has a higher cost for that mistake than most. If you have not surfed hollow, powerful shore break before, you have not surfed Zicatela before. Start at La Punta. Watch Zicatela from the shore. Then decide. .
