La Isla Puerto Vallarta: The Complete Guide
La Isla Shopping Village is the largest open-air shopping center in Puerto Vallarta, right in the Hotel Zone along the canal. Mr. Playas knows it well and will be straight with you: it is not the most authentic thing you will do in Puerto Vallarta. But it has its uses, and there are moments when it is exactly what you need.
What La Isla Is and Why It Matters
La Isla is an open-concept mall built around an artificial canal, with stores, restaurants, movie theaters, and entertainment. It was developed by GICSA, the same company behind Forum Cuernavaca and other commercial centers across Mexico. Unlike a standard enclosed mall, the design mimics pedestrian streets and plazas which makes walking through it significantly more pleasant, especially in the evenings.
How to Get to La Isla
It sits on Avenida Medina Ascencio in the Hotel Zone, about 3 km north of the airport. If your hotel is in the Hotel Zone, most properties are within walking distance or a five-minute Uber. From downtown Puerto Vallarta, an Uber runs ten to twenty minutes depending on traffic.
When to Go
Mr. Playas recommends La Isla at two specific moments: in the afternoon when beach heat becomes unbearable, and when it rains. Puerto Vallarta's rainy season (June through October) brings intense late-afternoon downpours that last an hour or two. La Isla is the ideal refuge to wait it out with an ice cream or a movie.
What's Inside La Isla
Mexican and international chain restaurants, clothing and accessories stores, Cinépolis with VIP screens, a kids' entertainment zone with rides and games, and a handful of local shops. This is not where Mr. Playas goes to buy authentic crafts — that is what downtown is for. But for casual food, beach gear you forgot at home, or killing time with family, it works well.
Mr. Playas' Honest Take
La Isla is not the most Mexican experience you will have in Puerto Vallarta. It is a mall. But it is a well-designed mall in a good location that does what it is supposed to do. If you are the type of traveler who wants to avoid anything that smells like a shopping center on vacation, skip it entirely. If you are traveling with family or the weather turns on you, it is a real and practical option.
