15 Things to Do in Playa del Carmen That Are Actually Worth Your Time

Mr. Playas March 2026 9 min read

Most "things to do in Playa del Carmen" lists are written by people who spent 4 days at an all-inclusive. This is not that list. Here are 15 activities I have personally done, with honest opinions on which are worth the money.

    1. Cozumel Day Trip

Take the first ferry (6 AM, $15 USD round trip), book a reef snorkel tour ($30–40), eat fresh ceviche at a palapa restaurant, catch the 5 PM ferry back. The best single-day activity on the entire Riviera Maya.

    2. Cenote Dos Ojos

Cave snorkeling through crystal-clear underground rivers with stalactites above you. $15 USD entry. Go before 10 AM to avoid tour groups. Bring a waterproof flashlight.

    3. Swim with Turtles at Akumal

Free if you wade out on your own (turtles are in knee-deep water). $40 with a guide. Go before 9 AM. One of the most reliable wild turtle encounters in the Caribbean.

    4. Rio Secreto Underground River

A guided swim/walk through a cave system with stalactites. $80 USD. One of the few commercial tours I genuinely recommend — small groups, no crowds, geologically spectacular.

    5. Eat at El Fogon

The best tacos al pastor on the Riviera Maya. $3–6 USD. The original on 30th Avenue. Cash only, expect a line after 7 PM.

    6. Breakfast at La Cueva del Chango

Garden setting with cenote-fed pools. The chilaquiles are perfect. $8–15 USD. Get there by 8:30 AM or wait 40 minutes.

    7. Tulum Ruins at Opening

Go at 8 AM. $5 entry. Mayan ruins on a cliff over the Caribbean. After 10 AM it becomes unbearably crowded. Two hours is enough.

    8. Punta Esmeralda Beach

The local's beach. Freshwater cenote meets the sea. Calm, shaded, family-friendly. Free. North of downtown.

    9. Street Food on 30th Avenue

Skip Fifth Avenue. Walk four blocks inland. Tacos, tortas, marquesitas, elotes. $2–5 USD for a full meal. This is the real Playa.

    10. Bike the Coastal Path

Flat, scenic, and free. From Constituyentes to Punta Esmeralda. Rent a bike for $10 or walk it.

    11. Cenote Azul (Near Bacalar Highway)

Not the Bacalar one — this is the massive open-air cenote south of PDC. $3 entry. Jump from the rocks into 30 meters of clear water.

    12. Coco Bongo Show

$60–100 with open bar. Part Cirque du Soleil, part nightclub. Worth doing once. Buy tickets online to avoid markups.

    13. Salsa Night at Mambo Cafe

$10 cover. Thursday nights are best. You do not need to know how to dance — the regulars will teach you.

    14. Gran Cenote

The picture-perfect turquoise cenote. $15 entry. Go at 8 AM opening. By noon it is packed with Instagram crowds.

    15. Walk Fifth Avenue (Once)

Free. Walk it for the people-watching, skip it for the food and shopping. One pass is enough to get the experience without spending $25 on tourist tacos.

I have walked every block of Playa del Carmen. Most of them twice.
