Mr. PlayasMexico's Insider Beach Guide
    BEACHES

Best Beaches in Playa del Carmen

Where the sand is actually worth your time — and where it is not.

I will be direct: Playa del Carmen's central beaches are not the Riviera Maya's best. The sand is nice, the water is Caribbean blue, but sargassum season (May–September) can turn the shoreline into a mess. The real gems are at the edges — Punta Esmeralda to the north and Cozumel a ferry ride away. Here is my honest ranking.

    Mr. Playas' Take

The beaches in Playa del Carmen are fine — not spectacular. The sand is white, the water is Caribbean blue on good days, and you can walk to them from Fifth Avenue in two minutes. But sargassum hits this stretch hard from May through October, and the beach clubs charge $20-40 minimums for a chair. If the beach is the main priority, take the 40-minute ferry to Cozumel or drive 45 minutes south to Akumal. For Playa itself, the beach north of the ferry pier is usually cleaner and less crowded than the main strip.

    Playa Central (Fundadores)
    #1 Downtown

    Playa Central (Fundadores)

Walk-to convenience, ferry dock views, street food steps away

Verdict: The most convenient beach in Playa. Not the best sand, but steps from everything and sargassum cleanup happens here first.

    Mr. Playas Tip

Get there before 9 AM on weekends or forget about a front-row spot. The vendors start circling by 10.

    Punta Esmeralda
    #2 North Playa

    Punta Esmeralda

Freshwater cenote meets the sea, calm water, families love it

Verdict: The best beach in Playa del Carmen. The cenote pool is the reason — calm, clear, and swimmable when the ocean is not.

    Mr. Playas Tip

This is the beach locals actually go to. The cenote pool near the shore is swimmable year-round and shallow enough for small kids.

    Playacar Beach
    #3 South (gated)

    Playacar Beach

All-inclusive resort strip, wide sand, manicured feel

Verdict: Wide, clean, and maintained by the resorts. Public access exists — walk south past the ferry dock.

    Mr. Playas Tip

You can access Playacar beach without staying at a resort — walk south past the ferry dock and enter through the public path. Nobody stops you.

    Mamitas Beach
    #4 Central

    Mamitas Beach

Beach club scene, DJs, bottle service, see-and-be-seen

Verdict: The party beach. Pay $40-50 for a chair and a DJ, or walk past the markers and use the public sand for free.

    Mr. Playas Tip

If you want free access, walk past the beach club boundary markers. The public sand is technically the same beach — just without the $50 minimum spend.

    Cozumel (Day Trip)
    #5 45-min ferry

    Cozumel (Day Trip)

World-class snorkeling, clearer water, less crowd

Verdict: Better water than anything in Playa. The 300-peso ferry is the best money you will spend on the entire Riviera Maya.

    Mr. Playas Tip

Take the first ferry (6 AM) and you get Palancar Reef practically to yourself. The 300-peso round trip is the best money you will spend on the entire Riviera Maya.
