Cabo San Lucas — The Complete Guide

The Arch. The marina. The nightlife that runs until Tuesday. The sport fishing fleet that leaves at 5:30 AM. The taco stand next to the luxury hotel. Cabo San Lucas contains multitudes. Mr. Playas' guide to all of it.

Cabo San Lucas sits at the very tip of the Baja California Peninsula, where the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez meet in a collision that produced the Arch — the natural rock formation that has appeared in more travel brochures than almost any other image in Mexico. It earned that status. In person, especially from a glass-bottom boat at golden hour, it is extraordinary.

The town around it is a full-service beach resort destination: marina, sport fishing, beach clubs, nightlife, restaurants at every price point, and a spring break season that draws more American college students than some US cities. None of that is a criticism. Cabo San Lucas does exactly what it promises, loudly and well. What it does less well: quiet. If you want a peaceful beach morning, El Medano on a weekday is your best shot.

    What to See & Do

    6 highlights
    🪨

El Arco de Cabo San Lucas

The most photographed rock formation in Mexico and the landmark that defines Cabo. Accessible by glass-bottom boat, kayak, or paddleboard from the marina. The tour includes Playa del Amor (Lover's Beach) and the sea lion colony on nearby rocks. At sunset, the light through the Arch is the shot everyone comes for.

Mr. Playas Tip: Glass-bottom boat tour: $20 USD. Go at sunset — the colors are unreasonable. Kayak rental for the independent option: $25–35 USD for 2 hours.
    🐋

    Whale Watching

December through March, humpback whales migrate to Los Cabos to breed and calve. Two to three-hour tours depart from the marina daily. The whales get close enough that you feel the vibration when they breach. One of the most reliable whale watching experiences in North America — sightings are nearly guaranteed in season.

Mr. Playas Tip: January and February are peak. Book ahead. Bring motion sickness medication if you are prone — the Pacific side can be choppy.
    🎣

    Sport Fishing

Cabo San Lucas is legitimately considered the marlin capital of the world — not marketing copy, it is a reputation built over decades of world records and international tournaments. Dorado, yellowfin tuna, wahoo, and sailfish run year-round. Charter boats leave at 6 AM. Shared charter to private yacht: options for every budget.

Mr. Playas Tip: Best marlin season: October–November. Shared charter: $90–130 USD/person. Private half-day: $400–600 USD. Private full day: $800–1,200 USD.
    🏖

    Lover's Beach & Divorce Beach

Two beaches separated by rocks at the base of the Arch. Lover's Beach (facing the bay) is calm and swimmable — bring snorkeling gear, there are fish. Divorce Beach (facing the Pacific) is for photographs only — the currents are dangerously strong. Access by water taxi from the marina only: no road access.

Mr. Playas Tip: Water taxi round-trip: $15–20 USD. Bring snacks and water — no vendors on the beach.
    🍸

    Nightlife

El Squid Roe, Cabo Wabo (founded by Sammy Hagar, still relevant), Mandala, and La Vaquita anchor the main strip near the marina. Ladies' nights on Thursdays are a Cabo institution. For something more relaxed, the rooftop bars with Pacific views are excellent for sunset cocktails without the cover charge.

Mr. Playas Tip: Everything is walkable around the marina strip. Do not drive — taxis everywhere.
    🤿

Snorkeling at Santa María & Chileno Bay

The two best snorkel spots near Cabo San Lucas. Playa Santa María: calm, clear water, good coral, colorful fish. Bahía Chileno: larger, popular with sea turtles, accessible from a public beach. Both are free to access — rent gear at the marina for $15–20 USD or bring your own. Get there before 10 AM for the clearest water.

Mr. Playas Tip: Santa María early morning is the best snorkeling in the immediate Cabo area. Reach it by taxi or rental car — about 15 minutes east on the Corridor.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    FAQ
    Is Cabo San Lucas safe?+
For tourists in the tourist zone (marina, El Medano, Corridor): yes, very much so. It is one of the most-visited and most-policed tourist areas in Mexico. Use standard common sense with belongings and avoid wandering into non-tourist areas alone at night.
Do I need a car in Cabo San Lucas?+
Not in the downtown and marina area — entirely walkable. For Corridor beaches (Santa María, Chileno), San José del Cabo, and Todos Santos: yes. Rental car from the airport is the most flexible option.
How many days do I need?+
3–4 days is the right amount. Day 1: Arch + Playa del Amor. Day 2: snorkel at Santa María + marina evening. Day 3: sport fishing or whale watching (Dec–Mar). Day 4: San José del Cabo. Add Todos Santos and La Paz for a fuller Baja experience.
    What is the water temperature?+
June to November: 79–84°F (warm and comfortable). December to May: 68–77°F (refreshing). The Sea of Cortez side is warmer than the Pacific side year-round.
Is sport fishing in Cabo worth it?+
If fishing is your thing: absolutely, this is as good as it gets. If you have never fished and are looking for a half-day activity, a shared charter is an easy yes. The crew handles everything.
