Things to Do in Playa del Carmen
Beyond the beach clubs and the Fifth Avenue tourist loop.
Cozumel Day Trip + Snorkeling
Take the 6 AM ferry, book a snorkel tour at Palancar or Colombia Reef, eat fresh ceviche on the island, and catch the 5 PM ferry back. The best single-day activity on the entire Riviera Maya.
Cenote Hopping (Dos Ojos + Gran Cenote)
Rent a car and hit Dos Ojos and Gran Cenote in one morning. Dos Ojos has the cave snorkeling; Gran Cenote has the picture-perfect turquoise pool. Go early — by noon both are packed.
Akumal Sea Turtle Snorkeling
You can swim with sea turtles in the wild at Akumal Bay. Show up before 9 AM and you do not need a guide — just rent a snorkel and wade out. The turtles are in knee-deep water.
Xcaret / Xel-Ha Parks
I will be honest: these are expensive theme parks. But if you have kids or want an all-inclusive day (food, drinks, snorkeling, shows), they deliver. Just do not expect authentic Mexican culture.
Tulum Ruins
The only Mayan ruins on a cliff overlooking the Caribbean. Go at opening (8 AM) and you get 30 minutes with almost no crowds. After 10 AM it is a zoo. Park at the lot and take the shuttle.
Fifth Avenue Walk
Walk it once for the experience, but do not eat here (overpriced) and do not buy silver here (overpriced). The people-watching is the real entertainment.
Rio Secreto Underground River
A guided swim/walk through an underground river with stalactites. One of the few commercial tours I genuinely recommend. Small groups, no crowds, and geologically spectacular.
Bike the Coastal Path
The beachfront path from Constituyentes to Punta Esmeralda is flat, scenic, and perfect for a morning ride. Rent a bike from any shop on 10th Avenue.
