The turtle circuit is 45 minutes. Then you are standing on a public beach in a town that still has a lagoon, a second bay, and a highway colectivo that will take you somewhere quieter.

Most people do not do this. They get back on the van. That is how Akumal became a stop instead of a place.

Yal-Ku: the Caleta, Not the Beach

Yal-Ku is a pocket where freshwater from the jungle hits the Caribbean. No surf. Visibility that goes milky if you arrive late and churn it. Fish that actually live there. A halocline — the blurry seam where fresh sits on salt — if you dive a few feet and look through it sideways like a tourist who just learned a word.

Turtles are possible. They are not why you paid.

  • Hours: 9am–5pm, every day, on the park's own site.
  • Kids under 4 free on the park rules, ID for the child rate.

Two Doors. This Matters.

The original / local entrance is the one on the left if you drive the residential road past the Akumal arch and keep asking. Recent write-ups still put it around 300 MXN adult, ~215 MXN kids 5–11. Life jacket not forced. Cheaper. More of a lagoon, less of a park.

The Xcaret-run entrance is the prettier brochure — around $20 adult / $15 kids 5–11 in 2026. Vest mandatory. Palapas, a café, the feeling that a corporation found your swimming hole. The official site sells "Admission," "Plus," and "Experience" bundles without printing an honest number on the landing page — they want you in the checkout. Budget the $20 band and do not be shocked if Plus is more.

Half Moon Bay

North of the main Akumal circus by a short road. Same turtles sometimes, better rock and coral, fewer coordinated vests.

This is where I send people who already did the licensed lap and want to swim like a person. Stay inside the reef. There are no lifeguards waiting to make your poor decisions into a story. Condos and small hotels sit on this curve; some let you eat if you buy a drink, some look at you like you parked in their living room. Behave accordingly.

If the main bay is a brown sargassum lid, walk here before you surrender the day.

Akumal Bay After You Get Out

The sand is public. The restaurants know you have a wristband tan. Eat fish, walk south toward the rocky bits, do not turn the afternoon into a second paid activity unless you mean it.

A Day That Does Not Feel Like a Transfer

  • If you only have a morning: licensed turtle slot at 8, tacos, colectivo out. Honest.
  • If you have a day: turtle slot early, shade, Yal-Ku late morning while the water is still a window, lunch, Half Moon or a nap. That is the whole town.
  • If the bay is ugly: skip the vest, go Yal-Ku, then Xcacel-Xcacelito if you want a nesting beach with a ticket and a backbone. Xcacel is a sanctuary, not a club. Sit down.

Getting Between Them

Yal-Ku is a drive or a sweaty walk through the residential maze north of town. With a car it is trivial. In a taxi from the main bay it is a short, overpriced hop you pay because you are wet and happy. Colectivo leaves you on 307 — you still need that last bit.

Half Moon is walkable if you like walking on Mexican sand at noon. I would not love that walk. Taxi or the little road.

What It Costs When You Add It Up

Who Should Skip Yal-Ku

  • Anyone who needs waves.
  • Anyone who cannot snorkel without panic — it is calm, not shallow-everywhere.
  • Anyone arriving at 3:30 expecting magic. Last entry is not the same as good light.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Yal-Ku worth it after Akumal Bay?

If you like fish and still water, yes. If you only wanted the turtle, no.

Which Yal-Ku entrance should I use?

The local door for price and fewer vests. The Xcaret door for bathrooms that look like a brochure.

Can I see turtles at Yal-Ku?

Sometimes. Do not buy the ticket for that reason.

Is Half Moon Bay public?

The water is. The lounge chairs are not.

Do I need a guide at Yal-Ku?

No. Gear rental is extra if you did not bring a mask.
